Dumortierite was named after French paleontologist, Eugene Dumortier. He spent the first part of his life as a gilder, and upon retiring, turned his focus to his true passion : Paleontology and Geology. He achieved great success completing four volumes of paleontological work for the Rhone-Alps region of Eastern France, and amassed an extensive collection of fossils. Upon his death, he bequeathed his collection to the Natural History Museum in Lyons. In 1881, a beautiful new blue mineral was discovered in the Rhone-Alps and was named in his honor.
